ARCO DA CALHETA
Arco da Calheta is a civil parish in the municipality of Calheta in the south of Madeira Island, bordering the municipality of Ponta do Sol. Buildings are found in the amphitheatre-shaped valley, as well as on the escarpments overlooking the Atlantic. Its landscape within this semi-circular valley was the basis for its name; the early settlers, baptized the region the “Arch of Calheta”.
A band of laurisilva forests subdivides the built-up area from the barren vegetation of the mountains. Through Arco da Calheta you can access Paul da Serra, the largest and most extensive plateau of Madeira about 24 square kilometres (9.3 sq mi), with an altitude average of about 1,500 metres (4,900 ft). On a good clear day, you can see both the south and north coasts of Madeira Island.
Arco da Calheta is considered to have the best general climate in Madeira, popular with bars, restaurants and beach culture. There are also multiple little chapels and churches dating back to the 16th century, and another point of interest is the old sugar cane factory that has now been converted to a boutique hotel and restaurant.
