Porto da Cruz is a civil parish in the municipality of Machico. It is approximately 2 kilometres from either villages of Santa Cruz and Machico city center and 20 kilometres from the regional capital, Funchal. Machico is a municipality, parish and city in the southeast part of the island of Madeira. When the island was first discover in 1419, Portuguese sailors João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira disembarked on the beach of Machico, beginning the era of Portuguese discoveries.
Today, this picturesque city and its surrounding areas are popular with bars, restaurants, beach, surf and art culture. In the heart of Machico there is a marina, a promenade and scenic landscapes of the town. Machico has a very mild mediterranean climate with small temperature differences between seasons. It is slightly cooler than Funchal in all seasons, but is still very mild in winter and has stable and warm summers, where heat-waves are rare.
