Fajã da Ovelha is a civil parish in the municipality of Calheta. The parish includes three bands of residential, forested and mountain area; the population is actually concentrated in the area between ocean cliffs and main regional road, linking it to the neighbouring parish Paul do Mar, a fishing village which also very popular with surf. And Fajã da Ovelha is located about 7 km northwest of Vila da Calheta, the “capital” of municipality of Calheta.

It is thought that the origin of the name Calheta derives from the small bay or cove, where the Marina is located in Vila da Calheta, sheltered by sea walls with imported sand, makes it one of the island’s few sandy beaches.
