    Calheta encompasses the south and south-west region of Madeira Island, with an area of approximately 116 Km2 makes it the longest of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is thought that the origin of the name Calheta derives from the small bay or cove, where the Marina is located in Vila da Calheta, sheltered by sea walls with imported sand, makes it one of the island’s few sandy beaches.

    Above the Marina, on the clifftop, Casa das Mudas Arts Center showcases contemporary art. Down towards the beach, you can find the Engenho da Calheta is a working sugar cane factory, with an on-site museum. Calheta is considered to have the best general climate in Madeira, popular with bars, restaurants, beach and art culture.
